Many dog breeds  originated from different parts of the world. Rottweilers, Dachshunds, and German Shepherds are from Germany, while the Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso and more are from China.

American English Coonhound

This dog breed originated in the south-eastern United States where they were bred from American and English Foxhounds, other European hunting breeds, and native dogs for the purpose of trailing and treeing a variety of animals. They are also great hunters.

American Eskimo Dog

Generally, it is believed that the American Eskimo Dog was first introduced into the United States by German immigrants in the twentieth century. Affectionately known as the “Eskie”, this dog breed is compact and very strong.



American Foxhound

The American Foxhound is a direct descendant of English and French hounds. This dog breed was used during the seventeenth century to seek out Indians. In later years, these dogs were revered for their talent at hunting wild animals.



American Staffordshire Terrier

The American staffordshire terrier dog breed gained in popularity in the 1920s with “Pete the Pup’s” appearances in the Our Gang (The Little Rascals) comedies. This dog breed must not be confused with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.


American Water Spaniel

The American Water Spaniel was used on farms for hunting, mainly in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They are one of the few breeds fully developed in America.



Boston Terrier

As the name says, the Boston Terrier breed was developed in Boston, Massachusetts. This terrier was bred from the bull and terrier pit-fighting breeds.



Miniature American Shepherd

This breed was developed in California during the late 1960’s by breeding small, unregistered dogs that were thought to be Australian Shepherds.



Rat Terrier

The Rat Terrier is thought to be the product of the combination of the Fox Terrier and Manchester Terrier. While the breed was created in England, it is in the United States where breeding and popularity turned the Rat Terrier into what it is today.



Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier is one of the few All-American bred breeds of today. The crossing of Smooth Fox Terriers was combined with other toy breeds including the Italian Greyhound, Chihuahua and Miniature Pinschers to create a smaller, companion sized breed.


Treeing Walker Coonhound

As settlers came to America, they brought with them their prized English Foxhounds. These dogs slowly morphed into a breed called the “Virginia Hound”, a dog that was very popular in the 1700s. These dogs then became what is now known as the Treeing Walker Coonhound.
